Parts of letter | Explain briefly the classification of letters

Parts of letter

Though there are several different kinds of letters, as mentioned above, each of which has its own particular form; but there are certain matters of form which apply to all these are:
Heading-writer’s address and the date
Salutation-greeting in friendly style, always followed by a comma
Body-the contents of the letter
Closing or subscription- the closing phrase followed by a comma
Signature- the name of the writer below the closing or subscription
Types of salutation and subscription for different types of letters are:

Points to be Remember:

All letters should be written in the style given in the diagram. The following points are to be kept into consideration:
Heading should always be on the right and top corner of the sheet.
The closing and signature should begin at about the same place as the heading.
You should centre your letter on the page using margins of about one inch.
The salutations and subscription must invariably end with a comma.
The old style was to put a comma after first liens of the heading and a full stop at the end of the last lien. But now a day no comma or full stoop is need in the heading. Both the style would do.
‘Yours’ in the subscription must have no apostrophe on‘s’ like yours.
Heading in a letter to the editor of newspaper is different from other letters. It is written at the space left for closing and signature. The date and month etc. are given in the first lien in this case whereas the address is given in the next.

Classification of Letters:

Letters can be classified according to their different purposes thus:
1.    Social or friendly letter        2.    Invitation letters
3.    Business letters            4.    Letters of application
5.    Letters to newspapers

Social or Friendly Letters:

A good way to keep in touch with a distant friend or relative is to write a social letter. There should be courtesy and sincerity in such letter as is shown in personal visits. You should write as you would talk to the person if he were standing before you. Make the letter cheerful and informative. Answer the questions that your reader may have asked.
