Ans: Translation method
This is the
most popular method in Pakistan Schools. It consists of learning English
through translation. The words, phrases and sentences of the foreign language
are translated in the native language.
Process of Translation Method
(1) Start
with Simple Nouns.
In translation method, teaching starts
with simple words of daily use just like the direct method. In the beginning
vocabulary and sound pronunciation should be developed.
(2) Simple structures.
At the
second step, the teacher should introduce very simple structures as “This is”,
“etc. There the structure should be translated into mother language. After that
the students should e encouraged to form structures themselves.
(3) Teaching of Grammar
In
translation method teaching of grammar goes along with teaching of structures.
Concepts of nouns, pronouns, adjectives etc… are clarified with the help of
mother language.
(4) Emphasis on reading and writing.
For
achieving mastery in spoken language, emphasis should be on reading and
writing. Fluency in reading would help in speaking. Writing too is important
for learning a foreign language. After learning a few meaningful words students
should be given practice in writing of those words, Reading should always be followed by writing.
(5) Translation and retranslation
The
translation method begins with the translation of simple words and then simple
sentences the teacher should proceed from simple to complex sentences.
Translation and retranslation is a powerful too for achieving mastery of the
language if the teacher uses this tool skillfully.
